Boardman Takes 3rd in Virtual Ohio Envirothon

Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District would like to congratulate Boardman High School’s Envirothon team, which recently took third place among 33 teams from 19 districts across the state in Ohio’s virtual Envirothon competition.

The online competition was the first of its kind, replacing the annual in-person competition. All teams participated in an online test and then the top six teams developed an online presentation that was judged virtually.

The winners were announced by the Ohio Federation of Soil & Water Conservation Districts through a Zoom call, led by Janelle Mead of OFSWCD. You can view it here:

Kathleen Vrable-Bryan, MSWCD district administrator and member of the Ohio Envirothon board, played an integral role in the planning process, co-writing the aquatics test and serving as the timekeeper.

“Many other area competitions were canceled due to COVID-19,” said Kathi. “So we were very glad to be able to step up and still offer this wonderful learning opportunity for these students. It was a lot of work, but it was a great team effort and well worth the time involved!”

The Ohio Envirothon committee is made up of 10 representatives from across the state. The committee also had help from other SWCDs and partnership agencies in the planning and hosting of the competition.

“We’re so proud and impressed by how well the students did,” said Kathleen. “And we’re excited to see the Boardman students and their advisor, Heather Moran, take home third place!”

The students were tested on their knowledge of soils and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and a current environmental issue — “Water Resource Management: Local Control and Local Solutions.”
