Community Comes Together for Mill Creek Watershed Cleanup

Boardman, OH – The Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation District, alongside dedicated community volunteers and partner organizations, came together on August 17th, for the Mill Creek Watershed Cleanup at the East Newport Boat Launch. The event was a resounding success, highlighting the power of community action in preserving local natural resources.

Volunteers of all ages rolled up their sleeves to remove trash and debris from the watershed, helping to keep Mill Creek and Boardman Township clean, healthy, and beautiful. Thanks to their hard work and commitment, countless bags of garbage and discarded items were cleared from the area, improving water quality and wildlife habitat while restoring the natural beauty of this vital community space.

“Events like these show how much of a difference people can make when they come together for a common cause,” said Kathi Vrable-Bryan, Mahoning SWCD Executive Director. “Protecting our waterways is about more than just today—it’s about safeguarding clean water, healthy wildlife, and natural spaces for future generations.”

This cleanup would not have been possible without the collaboration of incredible community partners, including Ohio EPA, Mill Creek MetroParks, the Mahoning County Green Team, Boardman Township, Buckeye Water to Trail Adventures, and Friends of the Mahoning River.

The effort also gained the attention of local media outlets, with coverage by 21 WFMJ, WKBN 27, WYTV, and The Youngstown Vindicator. Their support helps raise awareness about the importance of watershed health and the need for continued conservation efforts in Mahoning County.

Together, the cleanup demonstrated that small actions can lead to a big impact when it comes to protecting our natural resources.
