Mahoning SWCD Launches “Watershed Wednesdays” Campaign

Mahoning County, OH – The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) has officially launched a new public awareness initiative, Watershed Wednesdays, aimed at educating residents about the importance of protecting local watersheds and the water resources we all depend on.

If you’ve recently driven around Mahoning County, you may have noticed new billboards asking the question: “What are Watershed Wednesdays?” This is the start of an ongoing campaign designed to connect community members to the land and water systems that surround them.

This week’s kickoff message is simple but powerful: “You Live in a Watershed.”

A watershed is an area of land where all the water—whether from rainfall or snowmelt—flows over or under the ground to a common stream, river, lake, or other body of water. In Mahoning County, no matter where you live, the water from your home, yard, and streets eventually flows into one of six major watersheds. Because watersheds are shaped by land features rather than city or township borders, one community can influence several watersheds, and one watershed can span across many communities.

In short: everyone lives in a watershed, and everyone plays a role in protecting water quality.

“Clean water starts with each of us,” said Kathi Vrable-Bryan, Executive Director for Mahoning SWCD. “The choices we make every day—from how we care for our lawns to how we manage stormwater—directly impact the health of our local rivers, streams, and lakes.”

Over the coming weeks, Mahoning SWCD will be sharing facts about our watersheds, information on why clean water matters, and simple steps residents can take to help protect water quality. The campaign will also highlight upcoming volunteer opportunities so the community can get directly involved in conservation efforts.

Residents are encouraged to follow along each Wednesday on Mahoning SWCD’s social media platforms for new information, resources, and ways to make a positive difference.
