Boardman Students Learn About Water Quality Monitoring

Dr. Shane Smith, district technical educator, recently conducted water quality monitoring with 284 seventh-grade students from Boardman Glenwood Junior High School.

The monitoring was conducted on the school campus in a small tributary of Sawmill Run, which is a tributary to Mill Creek.

Students gained hands-on experience collecting and analyzing real-world water quality data while also gaining exposure to careers in environmental and natural resource fields.

Also participating were seventh-grade science teachers Eric Diefenderfer, Andrea Kratzer and Ian Head. The water quality monitoring is part of Dr. Smith’s coordination of storm water education activities and public involvement in water quality monitoring that contributes to fulfilling the district’s memorandum of understanding with the Mahoning County commissioners regarding the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s General Permit MS4 Program with the Mahoning County Commissioners.
