Join Us This July to Help Protect Our Local Waterways

Clean water is one of our region’s most valuable natural resources, and everyone can play a role in protecting it. This July, Mahoning SWCD and our community partners are inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and participate in two watershed cleanup events designed to improve water quality, protect wildlife habitat, and keep our rivers and streams beautiful for future generations.

Mahoning River Cleanup

July 5, 2026 | 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Join Mahoning SWCD, Buckeye Water to Trail Adventures, Friends of the Mahoning River, the City of Struthers and community volunteers as we paddle approximately 3.5 miles of the Mahoning River from the Struthers Community Boat Launch to Lowellville Riverfront Park, removing litter and debris along the way.

Volunteers are welcome to bring their own registered kayak or canoe, provided all required safety equipment is available and used. A limited number of kayaks will also be available for volunteers who need one.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while making a direct impact on the health of the Mahoning River and the communities that depend on it.

Mill Creek Watershed Cleanup

July 19, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Lake Newport Boathouse, Mill Creek Park

Later in the month, join Mahoning SWCD and Mill Creek MetroParks at the Lake Newport Boathouse for a cleanup focused on the Mill Creek Watershed. Volunteers will help remove trash and debris from the watershed while learning about the importance of protecting local streams, lakes, and wildlife habitat.

Gloves, bags, and cleanup supplies will be provided. Whether you prefer to work along the shoreline or assist from designated cleanup areas, every helping hand makes a difference.

Watersheds collect and carry water throughout our communities, but they also collect pollution. Trash left on streets, sidewalks, and streambanks often finds its way into our waterways, impacting water quality, wildlife, and recreational opportunities.

Whether you’re an experienced paddler, a first-time volunteer, or simply someone who cares about clean water, we encourage you to join us this July. Together, we can make a lasting difference for the Mahoning River, Mill Creek, and the communities they serve.
