Mahoning SWCD Calls for Volunteers for Mill Creek Watershed Cleanup

BOARDMAN, OHIO — The Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is inviting local residents to participate in a vital community cleanup event focused on preserving the Mill Creek watershed. Scheduled for Sunday, September 29th, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, the event will take place at the East Newport Boat Launch on East Newport Drive in Boardman, Ohio.

This event, organized in partnership with Boardman Township, the Mahoning County Green Team, and Mill Creek MetroParks, aims to protect and enhance the environmental health and natural beauty of the Mill Creek watershed. Volunteers are encouraged to join in this collective effort to remove trash and debris, contributing to the vitality of the watershed and ensuring its continued health for future generations.

Participants will be provided with all necessary supplies, including trash bags, gloves, and water. The cleanup will be divided into two groups: one group will take to the water in kayaks, generously provided by Mill Creek MetroParks, to clean up Lake Newport and the wetlands. The availability of these kayaks is limited, so volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if possible. The second group will focus on cleaning up the lake’s shorelines.

“This event is a valuable opportunity for community members to actively participate in environmental stewardship, safeguarding one of Mahoning County’s most treasured natural resources,” said Zack Felger, Outreach & Education Specialist for the Mahoning SWCD. “Our community has a deep connection to the Mill Creek watershed, and this cleanup is a chance for everyone to contribute to its preservation.”

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to register in advance to ensure a smooth and successful event. Registration can be completed online or by calling Mahoning SWCD at 330-740-7995.
