Mahoning SWCD Highlights Education and Outreach Achievements in 2024

 

Mahoning County, OH – The Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District achieved significant milestones in 2024 through its robust education and outreach initiatives, engaging thousands of residents in conservation and environmental stewardship.

Community Engagement at Its Best

Over the course of the year, Mahoning SWCD participated in more than 20 community outreach events, ranging from festivals to educational talks and youth programs. These efforts connected with over 4,000 participants, including 1,300 adults and 3,000 children, spreading awareness about critical conservation topics.

A standout program was the EcoTales Storytime Series, a collaboration with The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Each month, families gathered to explore conservation themes through stories and crafts, covering topics such as pollinators, forests, and wildlife.

Bringing Conservation Education to Schools

Mahoning SWCD brought natural resource education directly to local schools, visiting over 60 classrooms and reaching more than 2,400 students. These hands-on programs emphasized the importance of protecting soil, water, and wildlife in the region.

Promoting Practical Solutions

Rainwater management took center stage with presentations on Rain Barrels and Rain Gardens, showcasing sustainable stormwater solutions to nearly 100 adults. These programs highlighted how native plantings not only help manage water but also enhance landscapes.

Showcasing at Community Festivals

The SWCD team participated in major community events, including the 178th Canfield Fair, Youngstown State University’s Earth Day Festival, OH WOW’s Silly Science Sunday, and the Annual Riverfest hosted by Friends of the Mahoning River. At these festivals, residents had opportunities to engage with hands-on activities and access valuable conservation resources.

Strengthening Partnerships

Collaboration was key to success in 2024. Mahoning SWCD partnered with numerous organizations, including:

  • Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County
  • Mahoning County Land Bank
  • Pollinator Partnership
  • Ohio EPA
  • Mill Creek MetroParks
  • Friends of the Mahoning River
  • Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative
  • Mahoning County Engineer’s Office
  • Mahoning County Agricultural Society/Canfield Fairgrounds

These partnerships enabled the delivery of impactful workshops, community programs, and outreach events that extended the district’s reach and impact.

Measurable Impact

Mahoning SWCD’s efforts reached a total audience of 4,396 individuals. Over 1,000 conservation materials were distributed, and the district’s online presence thrived, garnering more than 40,000 views on social media and through newsletters.
