YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (April 13, 2020) – The Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation District office today announced plans for its spring fish sale, an initiative to advance water quality and support area pond and lake owners.

Orders for fingerling-size fish are due to the district office by 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 8. Individuals must pre-order. Pickup will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Species available for purchase include Japanese koi, white amur, largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid bluegill, channel catfish, redear sunfish, yellow perch and fathead minnows.

“We’re glad to partner with a local fish hatchery to provide these species of fish that thrive in our area,” said Kathleen Vrable-Bryan, district administrator. “Fish are an excellent way to indicate and monitor water quality, and some species even help maintain water quality.”

Orders can be placed with the district office by phone at (330) 740-7995 or by fax at (330) 259-1075. Click here to download the order form.

On the day of pick-up, each participant will need to bring a lined container filled with water from the pond where the fish will live.  The district office recommends five to 10 gallons of water per 100 fish. The white amur must be placed in a container with a lid or liner large enough to be tied at the top.  Five gallons of water are recommended for every two white amur.

For more information or pick-up recommendations, contact the district office.
