Registration Now Open for Portage SWCD Workshops
The Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District is excited to announce a series of upcoming workshops hosted by the Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District. These workshops are designed to provide valuable information and resources to help individuals better understand and manage their natural environment.
On Wednesday, February 21, will be the 2024 CAUV/OFTL Northeast Ohio Update. This workshop will include an update on Oak Wilt, which is a serious threat to forests. There will also be a review of current trends in the timber market, and a Q&A relating to CAUV & OFTL property tax reduction programs. Presenters will include John Kehn, ODNR Division of Forestry, Ryan Clester, Area 11 State Forester, and Matt Kelly, Portage County Auditor & Staff. On Friday, March 1, is an exciting Cover Crop Workshop where you’ll learn all about the benefits and techniques of cover crops. Doors will open at 8:30AM with light refreshments served. Presenters will include Dwight Clary, Clary Farms LLC, Dr. Sarah Eichler, Kent State University, & Cameron Mills, Mills Family Farms. On Saturday, March 2, is a Growing Northern Pecans workshop. Learn from experienced nut growers about how to grow pecan trees. The presenter Brian Farmer, Vice President of Ohio Nut Growers, will share his knowledge and tips on site requirements, planting seedlings, grafting, pruning, and small-scale harvesting.
