The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is guided by a five-member Board of Supervisors, each elected to serve staggered three-year terms. These unpaid volunteer positions are vital to the success of the district, as supervisors provide leadership, direction, and community credibility to the conservation work being done throughout Mahoning County. Board members play a crucial role in ensuring that soil and water resources are managed responsibly, while also supporting educational efforts, projects, and partnerships that benefit both residents and the environment.
Supervisors are responsible for attending monthly board meetings, shaping district policies, and working with staff to determine priorities for conservation programs. They also collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to strengthen partnerships and secure resources for the district. In addition, supervisors may attend area, state, or national events, which provide valuable opportunities to connect with other conservation leaders and stay up to date on emerging practices.
To be eligible to run for a position on the Mahoning SWCD Board of Supervisors, candidates must be at least 18 years of age and reside within Mahoning County. Candidates can be nominated by the SWCD Nominating Committee or by submitting a petition with at least 10 valid signatures from county residents. Applicants will also be asked to complete a short application form outlining their background, previous experience with conservation or community activities, and other qualifications that would help them serve effectively in this role.
For those interested in getting involved but not ready to commit to a full supervisor position, the district also offers the opportunity to serve as an associate board member. Associates attend meetings, participate in public events, and share their input with the board, helping them gain firsthand knowledge of district operations. Serving as an associate board member is an excellent way to learn about the responsibilities of the position and prepare for the possibility of running in a future election.
The time commitment for board supervisors generally includes twelve monthly meetings each year, an annual meeting, and occasional special meetings or events. While supervisors do not receive a salary, travel expenses to official events are covered, and the personal and professional rewards of serving are significant. Supervisors contribute their time, knowledge, and leadership to protect Mahoning County’s soil and water resources, support local landowners and residents, and ensure the future of the county’s
