Here are some questions we are often asked, along with answers.
Q. My water has been turned off. Can you tell me why?
We aren’t responsible for any utilities, including water.
Q. Can you investigate soils for septic systems?
No, we do not. We can’t do individual septic systems. You need to hire a private soil scientist.
Q. Will you come out to assess why there is water/flooding in our basement?
We can’t look in the basement, but we’ll look outside and assess what’s going on outside.
Q. Can you make my neighbor stop directing their runoff water toward my property?
We can help you resolve drainage issues on your property and assist with the placement of best management practices (BMPs) on your property, but we cannot force your neighbors to do anything on their properties. Unfortunately, in the State of Ohio, some of the drainage concerns may become civil matters that are to be resolved in court.

Q. Is my soil suitable for a specific crop or for a specific kind of garden?
We will gladly come out to assess this.
Q. I want to put in a pond and I need to find out where my utilities are. Can you help?
Yes, we can help with the installation, but first, you’ll need to call the Ohio Utilities Protection Service at OHIO-811.
Q. Can Mahoning SWCD help with wetlands?
We are glad to assist with you with your wetland questions. However, the Ohio EPA has the final say on isolated wetlands and the Army Corp of Engineers has the final say on contiguous wetlands. Both entities may require a landowner to have a delineation performed by a private consulting firm.
Q. Can you help to identify a plant species?
We work closely with Ohio State University Extension’s Mahoning County office, which can be reached at its website or at (330) 533-5538.
Q. Do you test drinking water?
We do not.
